There is no doubt in my mind that applying Business Best Practice to Government will help ensure quality, value and accountability, all of which are essential in the delivery of services to our citizens. The best approach to the current issues before council is to apply Business Best Practice. As the proprietor of a successful business in Burlington for over
37 years, I will bring this business experience and leadership to Council.
Civic Engagement I am concerned that so few citizens vote or actively get involved in the issues facing our community so over the past few months I have volunteered to be on the steering committee for Shape Burlington. Through consultations we are finding ways to make it easier for us to consult and share ideas. I'm excited about this opportunity and I am committed to help you feel comfortable speaking up about what is important to you.
The Shape Burlington paper is now available on the City of Burlington Website. It is a reflextion of citizens, city staff, council and special interest groups. I believe its important to note that we are facing the same challenges that any growing organziation is facing today and that the report recommendations will only help make a great city better. We are not moving from bad to good but from good to excellent.
Raising my children here in Burlington has given me insight into the real value of our educational infrastructure. My commitment to Education has led me to become a member of The Board of Directors at Sheridan College. I have also served in a number of capacities with the Ministry of Education, The Halton Board of Education and The Halton District Catholic School Board including the Co-operative Education Program for over 20 years. This experience will help me work with School Board Trustees.
One of my proudest and most rewarding community accomplishments has been as the Executive Director of Breast Cancer Support Services. It has been an honour growing this small grass roots charity to a globally recognized and respected organization serving women and families of individuals affected by Breast Cancer.
Through the years I have seen Burlington change from Orchards and Farmlands to community neighbourhoods. I believe it is crucial to protect what is left of our green space and respect our environment by reducing our footprint on it. The time to act in ensuring a healthy environmental future is now!
As your Councilor i will work towards improved community services, a better and improved hospital, protection for the environment and Best Practices in Government. I will listen to you, engage you and work hard to bring your concerns to council. I will remain committed to the things that matter to you and to me.
Together, lets show how we care about our home in Ward 6.
In my latest work "The Gift" we highlight the work we are doing at Breast Cancer Support Services. (click the link to view the film) I have been and continue to be a big supporter of charities and local causes in the Burlington Area. I have been recognized for this commitment through awards such as The Halton Woman of the Year (2000), the Zonta International Founder's Award, the Ontario March of Dimes Commendation Award, Cogeco Volunteer Achievement Award, Safe Passages Award, Burlington Civic Recognition Award to name a few. Most recently I was recognized in Hamilton Magazine as one of Burlington's "Change Makers".
I have been instrumental in the growth of the local organization, Breast Cancer Support Services, allowing it to grow from a small grass-roots organization, to a nationally recognized authority on Support of Women with breast cancer.
I Co-Chaired the Maternity and Childcare Campaign at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital which raised Two Million Dollars and since then I have raised over One Hundred and Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars for the hospital.
Through my longstanding community commitment I have raised millions of dollars for local initiatives.
